[edit] History

Stemming from discontent with other client offerings at the time, Dominic originally coded HydraIRC as an IRC client for personal use. It is loosely based on the design of Bersirc. Due to the how quickly it matured into a usable client, Dominic soon released it to the public. Since then, interest has grown in the client due to its quirky quit messages and grass-roots promotion.

[edit] Development

HydraIRC is coded in C++ and uses the Windows Template Library. Patches are accepted and approved only by Dominic.

The client is released under a non-OSI "limited-use source" license, which makes the source code available, but forbids redistribution and relinquishes code ownership of contributors.

Development slowed in early 2005 due to the author's other commitments.

[edit] Future plans

Dominic released tentative plans for version 0.4 to developers in December 2004.

[edit] Criticism

  • A self-promotional quit message is used by default when the user disconnects from a server, and can only be overridden manually upon quit.[citation needed]
e.g. (Quit: HydraIRC -> http://www.hydrairc.com <- 100,000+ downloads can't be wrong)
