Hybrid rudiments

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hybrid rudiments are "unofficial" rudiments (i.e. not one of the 40 international rudiments defined by the National Association of Rudimental Drummers and later the Percussive Arts Society), and are usually created by combining one or more of the standard rudiments new ways to create new sticking patterns. Over the years, many hybrid patterns have been informally identified and given creative names, although most of these are based upon the original 40.

Hybrids are a "grass roots" effort, and the fact that they have never been organized by a sanctioning body has been the cause of some confusion. For example, the primitive created by placing a grace note in front of a drag is known as a "cheese" in some circles and a "cherta" in others. A Flamadiddle with an additional grace note in front of the diddle is sometimes called a "Flamafliddle" and others a "Flama-flam tap". So some inconsistencies and redunancies in the names are to be expected.
