Hveragerði is a small town in the south of Iceland at about 40 km to the east of Reykjavík on the river Varmá. It has around 2000 residents.
The town is known for its greenhouses which are heated by hot water from volcanic hot springs in the area and in the town. Even exotic fruits are grown in these greenhouses. The area is part of the Hengill central volcano. In the gardens, you can detect white or red earth which is fuming.
To the south of Hveragerði, there is the small port of Þorlákshöfn. From here a ferry to the island of Heimaey can be taken.

The Americans at their base at Keflavik tend to refer to Hveragerði as "Hurdygurdy".
