[edit] The name
The name (Norse Urđardalr and Hurđardalr) is an old district name. (The name of the church site is Gjøing.) The first element is the genitive case of a disappered rivername (later called Gjøingelva 'Gjøing river'), probably *Urđ 'stony river' (from urđ f 'scree'). (The sideform Hurđardalr has an addition of a false /h/.) The last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'.
Until 1918 the name was written "Hurdalen".
