The Huntington Heroes are a 2006 expansion franchise member of the American Indoor Football Association. The Heroes played their 2006 home games at the Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse in Huntington, West Virginia. The team featured many former Marshall University football players. This is the second indoor football team for Huntington, following the River Cities LocoMotives, who played one season (2001) in the National Indoor Football League.
After losing to the Erie Freeze 46-38 at home on Sat. 3/25/06, the Heroes got revenge by taking them down 55-33 on Fri. 4/7/06 and handing them their very first loss of the season.
The Heroes were involved in one scandal during the 2006 season. It was in a game against Canton. Canton had won the game, but the win was disqualified because Canton violated the roster rules, and Huntington was awarded a forfeit win.[1] Canton challenged the ruling and was allowed to keep the winning game in the record.
At the end of the 2006 regular season, the Heroes were 9-5 and they earned the Northern Conference's #4 seed. Unfortunately, their inaugural season ended on a sour note as they lost to the top-seed Reading Express 56-23.
The Heroes had previously announced their intentions to join the newly-formed World Indoor Football League (where they would have joined fellow teams who also left the AIFA), but decided in the end to stay in the AIFA for 2007. Also, the team has announced their move to Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
[edit] Mascot & colors
The team's mascot, in part due to the name of their original arena, is a tribute to local military veterans. The uniform colors will feature red, white, and blue.
