[edit] Types of Hunters
After a canditate becomes a fully-fledged Hunter, they may choose to specialize in one particular area. The following is a list of the different types of Hunters that have appeared in the manga. These titles seem to be unofficial - so that any Hunter can name themselves accordingly to what they have chosen to hunt.
- Blacklist Hunters - The profession for the brave and determined upholders of justice, they have the heavy duty of tracking down the most dangerous and wanted criminals. Kurapika has expressed his interest in becoming a Blacklist Hunter.
- Treasure Hunters- They scour the world in search of rare and valuable booty, especially suited for those with a sense of adventure and a liking towards the unknown.
- Culinary/Epicure Hunters - Suited for the gastronomically inclined, the goal of a Culinary Hunter is to find and collect rare ingredients, and to bring these flavours to live by using new and creative styles of cooking. Menchi, an examiner in the second test, is an example of a Culinary Hunter.
- Archaeological Hunters - For those fascinated in bringing ancient cultures and structures to life. Ging, Gon's father, is one example of a Archaeological Hunter who has made significant contributions to this area of study. Satotsu, the examiner of the first test, was also an Archaeological Hunter.
- Wildlife Hunters- These are the people who feel a deep love for nature; whose job as a Wildlife Hunter involves the study and preservation of undiscovered animal species.
- Music Hunters - Definitely catered to the musically talented, they are the ones who have chosen the pursuit of rare musical pieces. Senritsu (Melody) is a Hunter of this category.
- Contract Hunters - Basically, they find rich people and make deals/contracts with them. Not much is known because they are only briefly mentioned by Leorio.
[edit] The Hunter License
Appearance
A Hunter licence is in the form of a normal card. It is slightly thicker and has inbuilt computer chips. The front shows your Hunter rank, and the back has a magnetic strip with a unique serial number that identifies each individual to their licence. It works similar to a credit card, with card machines that can swipe and read the licence. The license also comes with a range of extra benefits. Although these benefits can only be used by the true owner of a license, the Hunter License is still a valuable collector's item, and can be sold for great deals of money (enough money to support himself for at least 7 generations in luxury!)
Benefits
With regards to the numerous benefits, first and foremost is the unparalleled fame and recognition a licence holder can enjoy, being one of the few in the world who owns a licence. Next comes the material benefits, which include:
- 1. Having a 95% discount on all public services (i.e. hotel lodging, food, transport, etc.). Furthermore, all such services are provided at 1st class.
- 2. Unrivaled freedom to travel around the world. They are granted access to about 90% of countries that are normally restricted to outsiders, and access to 70% of areas that are normally deemed 'forbidden'.
- 3. No legal responsibility for killing people (this basically means Hunters can get away with murder!)
Ranks
Upon passing the Hunter Exam, candidates will receive a standard Hunter License. However, Hunters can be awarded with stars for significant contributions to society.
- 1 Star - given to hunters who have made a significant contribution to a part of society.
- 2 Star - given to hunters who have made significant contributions to several fields.
- 3 Star - given to hunters who have made extraordinary contributions to society over several fields. This is the rarest and most difficult rank to obtain, and is considered a great honour. The number of 3-Star hunters is about 10.
[edit] Characters
[edit] Ging Freaks
Nearly nothing is known about him except that he is a double Hunter (A Hunter must make great achievements in two areas of Hunts. eg: Black list Hunting and Treasure Hunting). According to Kaito, Ging easily has the qualifications to become a Triple Hunter. He's also very rich and as powerful as a president of a country. All other information about him is classified information in the official Hunters database. Netero, the head of the Hunter's Committee, said to Bisuke that Ging is one of the Five Nen Users, which means that Ging is one of the top 5 Nen users of the world. His current appearance is shown in the manga in Vol.8 between page 48 and 49.
[edit] Satotsu
Satotsu is a strange-looking, mouthless man who was the first of the appointed judges to test the candidates stamina. He leads them on a marathon where up to 90% of the candidates drop out, and he seems to do nothing more than walk along calmly whilst the others are forced to run faster and faster to keep his pace. Due to his strange appearance, it is joked that he looks like a human-faced monkey.
As a Hunter archaeologist in his normal profession, he was also inspired by Ging in taking up the Hunter license. One who initially felt a strong civic duty to carry out his role as a judge, he had progressively taken a liking to Gon and wished to help him. Despite his looks, he is a compassionate person.
[edit] Buhara
Menchi's companion in the second exam, a hulking figure with a large potbelly and an even larger appetite. Buhara's easy-going nature contrasts with Menchi's highly selective one.
Buhara was the judge in the first round of stage 2- and his condition for passing the round was for the candidates to hunt down the wild boar that is in the nearby forest, bringing the carcass for him roasted. It was an easy task (and interesting too- as you get to see the various methods Gon, Leorio and Killua used to get the animal) and almost all the candidates managed to bring one back for Buhara to savour- which he did with great relish; gobbling them down and leaving a large heap of bones beside him, and allowing 70 candidates out of 140 candidates to proceed to Menchi's part of the test due to his undescerning tastebuds despite being an epicure hunter.
[edit] Menchi
When Menchi is introduced, her most obvious quality is her pickiness- but it fits her profession very well, being the Epicurian hunter she is, and one of the world's best at that. Coupled with Menchi's sensitive and highly selective sense of taste and culinary skills is a physically fit body that enables her to carry out the search of unique foods and culinary experiences- in dangerous places.
Menchi was one of the 2 judges that presided over the second stage of the Exam. Her exam topic was to prepare a piece of sushi for her to taste. If it meets up to her expectations (which is very very stringent) the candidate would have passed the stage.
However, the test did not quite go as planned, as everyone but Hanzo was baffled as to what kind of dish sushi actually was (Hanzo is from the Hunter x Hunter equivalent of Japan, so sushi was a native food to him). Each character proceeded to deliver their idea of "sushi" to Menchi, only to have it rejected.
[edit] Rippo
The judge of the 3rd stage- with a pair of red sunshades and punky hairdo. Looks to be a slightly perverse character, with a sly look with eyes that are almost identical to the foxes in the preliminary stages. He concocts up many devious ideas- in the Tower of tricks, the hurricane storm and the number tag stages- that test the candidates in different aspects of group dynamics- both in a communal and individual front.
He is a blacklist hunter with a repertoire with includes the capture of "Master of Autopsies, Jonas", a serial killer able to skin people alive with his bare hands with hundreds of kills whose corpses were never found in less than fifty pieces.
[edit] Netero
This old man is none other than the head of the Hunter committee- which presides over the awarding of hunter licenses to suitable candidates that passed the test. Netero made a rather stunning entry in his first appearance-making a free-fall jump from the hunter blimp (flying at a very high altitude) without a parachute, landing squaring on his feet, without any sign of damage.
A highly eccentric old man with many unconventional ideas (Netero's idea of the final stage of the exam is surely unconventional enough!); even Hisoka seems to be wary of this figure.
He is said to be the no. 1 strongest Hunter in the world 50 years ago, but he comments that he is already past his prime at his current age.
[edit] Senritsu (Melody)
Senritsu is an emission type nen user. She makes her soothing aura flow out to people when she plays an instrument. This special aura can heal people's tiredness, illnesses (if it's not a serious one) and it can calm down people. She also has a very sharp sense of hearing and can tell a person's mood just by listening to that person's heart beat. For example, she knows when people are lying or when someone has completely lost his/her temper.
Senritsu is short and, to put it bluntly, ugly when first introduced, contrasting with her kind soul. However, she was not always like this. She was once a normal person. She was changed when she and a friend listened to the mythical Sonata of Darkness. The Sonata is a musical piece said to have been written by the devil himself. It is composed of four parts: Piano, Viola, Flute, and Harp, and it is said great misfortune will befall whoever listens to it. One night, Senritsu and her friend were drunk, and her friend played the Sonata. Its power was so great, that upon listening only to the first verse of the Flute part, Senritsu was disfigured, especially in her arm. Her friend was not so lucky; his entire body was disfigured like Senritsu's arm, and her friend perished after hearing the whole song. In exchange, her musical nen abilities were increased. Senritsu's goal is to return to her former body, and destroy the Sonata.
Senritsu is a Music Hunter and is the kind and understanding member of Neon's bodyguards. Senritsu is always ready to listen to anyone's confesssions and has the gift to make people open up to her. She is one of the very few characters who has made Kurapika open up to her and Leorio realizes that.
[edit] Kaito (Kite)
Kaito is the very first Hunter we meet in the story. He is a disciple of Ging Freaks, Gon's father. It is Kaito who will reveal the truth about his father, which had previously been hidden by Mito, who claimed Ging died in an accident.
We also meet Kaito later on in volume 18, where he's on a mission collecting data about rare species in the country of Kakin. In volume 19, we discover Kite's Hatsu: Crazy Clown. A roulette with numbers going from 1 to 9 appears rolling, and once the number is chosen, the corresponding weapon appears.
Known abilites.
2: roulette scyth 4: roulette rifle 3: 4 roulette staffs
We only know about a few weapons and it seems as long as Kaito hasn't used the then appeared weapon in a particular way, it won't disappear. The Crazy Clown can also talk and comment on Kaito's actions and mood. It has a rather sarcastic to cynical tone.
Kaito unfortunately dies at the hands of a Royal Guard of the Chimera Ants (Nefelpitou) and gets rebuilt into a manipulated puppet to train the ants.
[edit] Pokkuru (Pokkle) (No. 53)
Nen type: Not directly stated, but it seems to be Emission based on his ability. A hunter who passed on the same year as Gon, Pokkuru had been taking his second attempt to pass the Exam. He's an accomplished archer that carries a bow and shaft of arrows wherever he goes. The arrows are tipped with a potent tranquilliser that even with a small nick, induces paralysis for any person for up to a week. Pokkuru's aim in life is to become a successful wildlife hunter through obtaining the license.
During the discussion that took place after the end of the Exam, Pokkuru had lingering doubts over the way Kurapica had passed the last stage. In fact, he was always wary of Kurapika as he excelled on all aspects of character. After the Hunter Exam, Pokkuru isn't seen again until the Chimera Ant arc, in which he is brainwashed into telling the Chimera Ants about nen. After revealing it to them, Pokkuru is killed and eaten. His nen ability is a bow created from nen, in which he can shoot arrows with the seven different colors of the rainbow. Each arrow has its own attribute, such as having faster speed than others.
[edit] Hanzo (No. 294)
Hanzo passed the Hunter exam in the same year as Gon.
Breaking the stereotyped figure of a silent ninja, Hanzo has a very talkative and somewhat charismatic personality. Having undergone a vigorous and strict physical training since young, his body is both supple and strong, with a fighting ability that far surpasses Gon, as seen in the final match between the two. Supplementing this is a handful of underhand tactics which he can resort to when the situation requires of him, as a ninja is well versed in the art of torture and camouflage. During the match with Gon, he tried to force Gon into submission by fracturing his arm, but to no effect, due to Gon's strong will.
