[edit] History

The Humtones were founded in 1981 by Andrew Garthwaite, class of 1983. The group was primarily comprised of former glee club members who wanted to continue singing all-male a cappella after the college (and subsequently the club) began admitting women in 1980. At that time, the group performed swing music and jazz standards under the name "Skip Doo Wop (see below) and the Humtones."

[edit] Repertoire

As a descendant of Haverford College's Glee Club, the Humtones originally performed exclusively swing and jazz music. Today, the group maintains a diverse repertoire of self-arranged songs among pop music, rock music, jazz and country music genres.

[edit] Performance

The Humtones traditionally perform one full-length, solo-billed concert per academic semester. These concerts involve a theme, comedy sketches and 10-12 songs. Past concert themes include: "Die Hard with a Humtone," "Humtones, Inc." and "The Humtones Go to Jail."

Smaller shows and a cappella jams at Haverford, Bryn Mawr College and Swarthmore College occur more frequently. Additionally, the group tours during Haverford's Fall (early October) and Spring (early March) Breaks. Tours usually involve several shows over the course of 4-6 days among colleges in the Northeast, though recent tours have also taken the group South and West.

Traditional Humtones performance garb consists of blue jeans, a white shirt and a tie.
