Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

The Department of Human Resources and Social Development, also referred to as Human Resources and Social Development Canada, is the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for providing Canadians with the resources and skills needed for the workplace ad their community.

HRSDC supports employers, employees, people receiving Employment Insurance, students and those who need focused support to participate in the workplace. HRSDC also supports the needs of the homeless and the national Canada Student Loans program.

HRSDC was created in December 2003 when Human Resources Development Canada was reorganized into two separate departments. In July 2005, Bill C-23, an Act to establish the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development and Bill C-22, an Act to establish the Department of Social Development and repeal the Department of Human Resources Development was given Royal Assent in the Canadian Parliament.

In September 2005, the department's service delivery components were transferred to the new Service Canada initiative, which will take over the administration of Employment Insurance and Human Resource Centres of Canada for Students (HRCC-S), in addition to service delivery for other government departments such as [passports].
