[edit] Another rebirth for Ice Hockey in Hull

The Stingrays were formed in 2003 replacing the Hull Thunder as members of the British National League. The new owners were Mike and Sue Pack who brought with them a promise of financial stability after years of uncertainty. The Stingrays competed in the BNL from 2003 until 2005 and following the BNL's demise were elected into the English Premier Ice Hockey League.

Under the guidance of Great Britain coach Rick Strachan, the Stingrays finished 8th in a highly competitive 13 team league and were runners-up in the EPIHL Cup.

However, the Packs were unhappy playing their team in the Premier League. Travelling costs were significant for the predominantly south east based league and spectator numbers fell. After the end of the 2005-06 season, the Stingrays sought admission into the Elite Ice Hockey League. Their application was finally approved after weeks of speculation on June 22nd 2006. Hull will have a representative in the top-flight division of British Ice Hockey for the first time since the Humberside Hawks played in the Premier Division of the British Hockey League in the 1995-96 season.

[edit] Standout Players

During their brief 3 season history Hull Stingrays have had several standout players.

  • Ladislav Kudrna Player of Year 2004/05 - An impressive 91.7 save percentage from 1824 shots.
  • Evgeny Alipov A non stop work ethic and constant smile made him a big favourite among fans, who in 2006 decided to name the fans player of the year trophy after him.
  • Pavel Gomenyuk Talented Ukrainian defenceman, adjusted to the British game well, the team seemed lost on the occasions he did not play. Stepped up to become Captain after the departure of Canadian Craig Minard early in the 2004/05 season. Moved up to the Elite Ice Hockey League with Newcastle Vipers for 2005/06 after impressing most other clubs. Returned to Hull when the club made the move up to the Elite Ice Hockey League in time for the 2006/2007 season and was selected as Club Captain.
  • Jeff Glowa Club captain (2005/06), and top goal scorer, always has a smile for everybody. Will return to compete in the Elite League in 2006/2007.
