Although the link with his car crash is incidental, his brooding good looks led to him being known as the James Dean of cycling. Ever the showman, he would play on this by riding with a comb in the pocket of his jersey, in order to tidy his hair before he crossed the finishing line, so as to look his best for his female fans.
