Hugh James Arbuthnott, CMG. Born 27 December 1936.

Educated Ampleforth & New College, Oxford. 2nd Lt, Black Watch. Joined HM Foreign (subsequently Diplomatic) Service 1960-96. Head of European Integration Department (External), FCO, 1974-78. Served in Paris as Counsellor (Agricultural & Economic), then as Head of Chancery 1978-83,

HM Ambassador to Romania, to Portugal and to Denmark.

Author (ed. with G. Edwards): Common Man's Guide to the Common Market (1979)

Son of James Gordon Arbuthnott and Margaret Georgiana, née Hyde. Married, three sons .
