Hugh Clifford, 2nd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh

Hugh Clifford, 2nd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1663-1730) was baptized on December 21 1663 in Ugbrooke and died on October 12 1730 in Cannington, Somerset. Though generally the 4th child and son, he was the eldest living son when his father died. He succeeded his father in the barony on his father's death in 1673.

In 1685 he married Anne Preston, who died in July 1734 in Ugbrooke and was buried on July 10 1734. She was the daughter of Thomas Preston, 3rd Baronet Preston of Furness, co. Lancashire, and Mary Molyneux, daughter of the 3rd Viscount Molyneux, also she was sister-in-law to the 2nd Marquess of Powis.

They had nine sons and six daughters. Their daughters were:

  1. Hon Elizabeth Clifford, born 1689, died September 25 1721, she married first William Constable, 4th Viscount Dunbar (1653-1718). They had no issue. She married secon in November 1720 Charles Gregory (Fairfax), 10th (?) Viscount Fairfax of Emley (d. 1721). They had no issue.
  2. Hon. Catherine Clifford, born 1694, died ?, was nun at the English Benadictine Convent in Ghent.
  3. Hon. Mary Clifford, born 1695, died ?, was nun at the English Benadictine Convent in Ghent.
  4. Hon. Anne Clifford, born 1704, died 1762, married in 1723 George Cary of Tor Abbey, Torquay, Devon. They had no issue.
  5. Hon. Amy Clifford, born 1705, died 1731, buried at Saint Pancras in London, married in 1719 as his first wife Cuthbert Tunstall Constable (d. 1740) of Burton Constable, Holderness, the nephew of both the 3rd and the 4th Viscount Dunbar. They had two sons and two daughters.
  6. Hon. Preston Clifford, born 1707, died ?, was nun at the English Benadictine Convent in Ghent.

Their sons were:

  1. Hon. Francis Clifford, born 1686, died as infant.
  2. Hon. Thomas Clifford, born December 12 1687, died December 2 1718, buried March 9 1719 in Cannington, Somerset. He married as her first husband on December 22 1713 Charlotte Maria Livingstone, 3rd Countess of Newburgh (1694-1755). They had two daughters:
    1. Anne Clifford, died April 1 1793, married first on December 22 1739 at Saint Sulpice in Paris, France John Joseph Mahony, 2nd Count of Mahony, who died in 1757. They had one daughter. She married second on April 13 1773 Don Carlo Severino.
    2. Frances Clifford, died in Ugbrooke, was buried at Chudleigh Church on July 7 1771.
  3. Hon Francis Clifford, born December 25 1690, died in Germany.
  4. Hon. William Clifford, born 1692, died 1702 in Ugbrooke.
  5. Hon. George Clifford, died as infant.
  6. Hon. Charles Clifford, died as infant.
  7. Hugh Clifford, 3rd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1700-1732)
  8. Hon. Henry Clifford, born 1702, died on August 21 1725, was buried in Cannington.
  9. Hon. Lewis Clifford, born 1709, died in Flanders.

He was succeeded in the barony by his eldest living son.
