Hueco Mundo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hueco Mundo is a fictional dimension in the manga and anime series Bleach, where the series' main antagonists, the hollows, reside.

Hueco Mundo is located between the living world and Soul Society, but does not appear to be the Dangai. It can only be accessed by ripping a hole in the dimensional fabric separating the worlds, or using a special technique known as a garganta (Spanish for throat). According to the shinigami, all hollows dwell in Hueco Mundo regardless of their shape, size, or power.

The landscape of Hueco Mundo is that of a white desert, with dunes like those of the Sahara and seemingly no end. The desert is littered with what appear to be boulders and dead, shriveled trees, but these are actually a form of quartz. Also notable, there is a much higher concentration of spirit energy in Hueco Mundo's atmosphere than there is in the material world or Soul Society[1] , thus allowing hollows to gain nourishment despite the lack of human souls.

Like that in real world deserts, active life in Hueco Mundo appears to be few and far between. Hollows generally seem to dwell below the surface or in other areas until something provokes them to leave their shelter, like the intrusion of a foreign entity.

In the anime, Pluses can also enter Hueco Mundo by unknown means. It is assumed that they are brought there after being abducted by hollows before they are consumed and become hollows themselves. Orihime Inoue's brother Sora was one such Plus.

Las Noches (虚夜宮, Spanish for the nights) is a fortress and the base of operations of Sōsuke Aizen, Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen after defecting from Soul Society. They currently reside there with their army of arrancar. Currently, Uryū Ishida, Ichigo Kurosaki, Rukia Kuchiki, Renji Abarai and Yasutora Sado have infiltrated Las Noches in an attempt to rescue Orihime Inoue, who was brought there after agreeing to go there with Ulquiorra in exchange for her friends' safety.

The fortress itself looks similar to a mosque. It consists of a main building with a domed center surrounded by several large towers and smaller buildings. Atop the dome are six smaller towers (or as they appear), which seem to contain areas such as Aizen's throne room and the Espada meeting hall. Also, in the room where Orihime is kept, there is one large Islamic rug on the ground that is facing outside, much like those in rooms used for Islamic prayer. Like everything else in Hueco Mundo, every building is colored white.

Las Noches is easily the largest building structure in the Bleach universe, appearing as large as (if not larger than) the Seireitei in Soul Society. Due to its immense size, Ichigo once commented that it could be an illusion as he, Chad and Ishida did not seem to make any progress getting closer to it, despite running until they were exhausted. Also, according the arrancar Nell Tu, it takes about three days to move around its width.

[edit] Trivia

  • In Hueco Mundo, the Moon is on the opposite lunar phase of that in the human world.
