[edit] Geography

Hubbards is located on the eastern side of the Aspotogan Peninsula, and along the northern shore of St. Margaret's Bay. It borders the communities of Simms Settlement and Queensland.

Hubbards sits astride the county line bordering Halifax County and Lunenburg County and is located in the Halifax Regional Municipality and Chester Municipal Disrict respectively.

Hubbards is located approximately 60 kilometres west of Downtown Halifax and 50 kilometres east of Bridgewater on Highway 103.

[edit] History

In the earlier part of the 20th century, Hubbards was a successful fishing community. During World War II and the Cold War, a nearby Royal Canadian Navy (Canadian Forces after 1968) naval radio station in Mill Cove was a major employer until its automation in the 1990s. Hubbards is a popular summer vacation destination. Numerous cottages, inns, campgrounds, restaurants and the famous Shore Club (the last of Nova Scotia's great dance halls) contribute to an amazing summer economy. The Hubbards and Area Business Associaton provokes and works with an incredible diligence to sustain a "shop local" economy. Hubbards features an absolutely breathtaking picturesque locale (especially on (Hubbards Cove) with a yacht club, Nova Scotia's smallest provincial park, campground and 10 beaches within "drying distance" of one another.

The CBC television series Black Harbour was shot on location in Hubbards between 1996 and 1999.

[edit] Shatford Trust Fund

In the 1950s, oil businessman J.D. Shatford, who vacationed in Hubbards, started an educational trust fund for residents of the community whereby graduating students from high school receive bursaries for post-secondary education. Shatford's endowment has also produced the J.D. Shatford Memorial Elementary School and J.D. Shatford Public Library.
