Hsichih City

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hsichih (汐止; Wade-Giles: Hsi-chih; Hanyu Pinyin: Xìzhĭ; Tongyong Pinyin: Sijhih) is a city in Taipei County, Taiwan Province of the Republic of China. Literally, xìzhĭ means "the end of tides". This is because the tide can be observed only downstream from Hsichih along the Keelung River. It is located in the Keelung River Valley between Taipei City and Keelung City, through which the old Jukando Highway and Jukan Railway Line passed during the Japanese occupation; nowadays both north-south freeways (National Highway No. 1 and National Highway No. 3) pass by Hsichih as well as the Western Line railroad.

Its population grew up quickly in the 1980s and 1990s and has become an important suburban city. Hsichih suffered serious flooding several times before the embankment along the Keelung River was constructed in 2002.

Hsichih is home to many companies, such as Acer and DFI.
