Howard Payne University is a four-year private university located in Brownwood, Texas. The current president is Dr. Lanny Hall.

Currently the university enrolls 1,400 full-time students. Howard Payne is well known in the state for both the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom as well as its Christian Studies program. Howard Payne is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

HPU offers more than 50 majors, minors and pre-professional programs within six schools: Science and Math, Business, Christian Studies, Education, Music and Fine Arts, and Humanities.

Howard Payne athletic programs include NCAA Division III football, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, women's softball, men's baseball, track, and tennis. The HPU mascot is a Yellowjacket named Buzzsaw.

Howard Payne College was founded by the Pecan Valley Baptist Association at Indian Creek, Texas, on June 20, 1889. The two men considered the founders of the college are John D. Robnett, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Brownwood, and Noah T. Byars, in whose blacksmith shop Texas declared independence on March 2, 1836. They were memorialized when Texas State Historical Markers were placed in Old Main Park in 1998.

Robnett was president of the first Board of Trustees. Robnett busied himself in raising funds for the school during the summer of 1889. Visiting Missouri in August, he was successful in securing a sizable gift from his brother-in-law, Edward Howard Payne, and before November 1, 1889, the Board of Trustees resolved to name the school Howard Payne College.

The first session opened on September 16, 1890, with A. J. Emerson as president and a faculty of twelve. A separate preparatory department furnished instruction below the freshman level. The school granted its first academic degree in 1895 and continued as a degree-conferring institution until 1900. It operated as a member of the Baptist correlated system of schools with junior college status from 1900 to 1914, when it again become a senior college.

In 1953, Daniel Baker College, which originally had been a Presbyterian college and in 1950 had become the Episcopal College of the Southwest, was consolidated with Howard Payne. The Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom, the Dr. Guy D. Newman Hall of American Ideals, and the Bettie and Robert Girling Center for Social Justice stand on the original campus of Daniel Baker.

In 1974, Howard Payne College became Howard Payne University upon approval of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

HPU is organized into six schools: Science and Math, Business, Christian Studies, Education, Music and Fine Arts, and Humanities.

  • ACADEMY OF FREEDOM HONORS PROGRAM - Developing graduates who are innovators and leaders in their fields is the heart of the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom.
  • ACCOUNTING - Students seeking the Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting are required to take a 30 semester hour business core which consists of courses in accounting, business, finance, marketing and management.
  • ART - The Department of Art offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in art communication and art education.
  • ATHLETIC TRAINING - The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at Howard Payne University provides students the opportunity to earn the Bachelor of Science degree in exercise and sport science with an athletic training specialization
  • BIOLOGY - The Department of Biological Sciences offers a curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees.
  • BUSINESS - Business Education, Finance, Management, and Marketing
  • CHEMISTRY - The Department of Chemistry offers a standard chemistry degree and a chemistry with a biochemistry concentration.
  • CHRISTIAN STUDIES - Bible, Biblical Languages, Bivocational Christian Ministry, Bivocational Education Ministry, Cross-Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Practical Theology, Religious Education, Youth Ministry
  • COMMUNICATION - The Department of Communication offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Included in this department are the disciplines of communication studies, public relations and telecommunications.
  • CRIMINAL JUSTICE - The Department of Criminal Justice offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BAAS) degrees.
  • COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS - The Department of Computer Information Systems offers the Bachelor of Business Administration and the Bachelor of Science degrees in computer information systems.
  • EDUCATION - All-level, K-4th grade, Middle School, Secondary
  • ENGLISH - The Department of English offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in English. An English major requires 30-36 semester hours.
  • GENERAL STUDIES - The purpose of the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree is to meet the needs of non-traditional students who desire a baccalaureate degree incorporating prior learning experiences.
  • EXERCISE AND SPORT SCIENCE - Exercise and Sport Magagement, Physical Education
  • HISTORY - General History, American History, European History
  • INTERDISCIPLINARY POLITICAL SCIENCE - Lobbying, Paralegal Studies, Political Consulting, Pre-Law
  • LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES - The liberal arts and sciences major seeks to build upon the knowledge and skills base of the general education core
  • MATHEMATICS - The Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees are available through the Department of Mathematics.
  • MULTIMEDIA COMMUNICATION - The multimedia communication major combines faculty and courses from the Departments of Computer Information Systems, Communication and Drama, and Art
  • MUSIC - The Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Music degree, with emphasis in instrumental, choral or pedagogy/accompanying; the Bachelor of Music Education degree,and the Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • POLITICAL SCIENCE - General major in political science, pre law, political consulting and lobbying
  • PSYCHOLOGY - The Department of Psychology offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees
  • SOCIAL WORK - The Department of Social Work offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in social work.
  • SOCIOLOGY - Students selecting sociology will be seeking a broad base of knowledge in the subject.
  • SPANISH - The Department of Modern Languages offers a major in Spanish, consisting of 30-36 semester hours
