Howard P. House

Howard Payne House, M.D. founded the House Ear Institute in 1946 in Los Angeles, CA. He is often considered to be the father of modern otology. The House Ear Institute developed the Cochlear Implant and the Auditory Brain Stem Implant.
Dr. House perfected many critical otologic surgical proceedures including the fenestration operation in the 1940's and later the stapedectomy surgery in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. He performed more that 30,000 of these procedures restoring hearing to those affected by otosclerosis.
Dr. House treated Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope, and many other notable figures.

Howard P. House was born in 1908 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
After marrying Helen, he fathered three children: Kenneth House, Caroline House, and John House. Kenneth become a noted pychoanalyst. Caroline became an olympic swimmer. And John followed in his fathers steps and become the president of the House Ear Institute.
