Howard Industries

Howard Industries is a transformer manufacturer located in Laurel, Mississippi. Howard Industries was founded in 1968. Howard Industries claims to be the world's largest manufacturer of transformers, and is the largest employer in Laurel.
Howard Industries has attempted to make a dent in the Personal Computer market to little avail. In 1997, Howard Industries claimed the PC division would create 5,000 jobs within 5 years while giving PC giants like Dell, Gateway, Compaq and HP a fight for market share. As of 2006 and millions of state-subsidized funding, few jobs have materialized from this venture. Also, no tenants have taken residence in the reported $100 million dollar Howard Tech Park located in Ellisville, MS. Now that the University of Southern Mississippi has launched their own tech park it is unlikely the Howard Tech Park will find companies to occupy the sprawling facilities. USM is located in the much more heavily populated Hattiesburg, about 20 miles from Laurel. Recently the company has entered the field of substation manufacturing. The substation plant is located in Ellisville, across from the new state funded Howard Tech Park.
