[edit] History

Howard Hall is one of the oldest buildings on the campus of Notre Dame, and is in many ways a trailblazer. Constructed in 1924, Howard Hall was the first instance of a Notre Dame building being built in the Gothic style, and was also the first building to be named after a lay person -- Notre Dame Professor and Indiana Supreme Court Justice Thomas Howard. The dorm was converted from a male to a female residence hall in 1987, at which point the dorm took on the now-familiar Duck as its mascot.

Although it is one of the smallest dorms on campus, Howard Hall has a number of signature events throughout the year. Among these events are the Howard Hoedown (a fall dance), an annual bone marrow drive, and a campus-wide marshmallow roast to celebrate the first snowfall of the year.

[edit] Distinguishing Features

Howard Hall is probably best known for its quaint double archway that separates the first floor into two sections and passes under the upper three floors of the hall. Adorning these arches and the other main entrances to Howard are a number of gargoyle-type stone carvings depicting anything from an owl to student who has just received a less-than-stellar report card. The actual rooms in Howard are many and varied; Howard offers rooms that range in size from 1 to 5 residents. A few residents are even lucky enough to find themselves in spacious singles on the wing of the second floor, with a breathtaking view of Bond Hall.

Howard Hall offers one of the most diverse room options on campus. Half of the rooms are singles, and the remaining rooms include: doubles, triples, 2-person suites, 3-person suites, 4-person suites, and 5-person suites.

However, many Notre Dame students who live anywhere but South Quad usually have to ask "Where exactly is Howard?" before coming to visit.

Howard Hall also has a tradition of referring to male students of the University who frequent the hall as "Mallards". The wit of this clever play on the word "male" and the mascot of Howard Hall is often underappreciated by those to whom the moniker is applied.

[edit] Current Rector

Ms. Jennifer A. Olivia, M.A.

Jenni Olivia comes to the University after a 6 year run as the Director of Youth Ministry at St. Matthias Parish in Milwaukee. It was in Milwaukee where Jenni earned her B.A. in Theology and Behavioral Science from Mount Mary College in 1996 and her M.A. in Pastoral Studies from Saint Francis Seminary.

In her spare time, Jenni enjoys shopping and playing ultimate Frisbee and kickball. She recently received her motorcycle driver's license, but does not own a bike yet. She hopes that this will soon change.
