Howard Bingham was born in Jackson, Mississippi 1939, the son of a minister and Pullman porter for the US railroad.

After initially failing a photography course, he was hired by a local newspaper and there he met the young Cassius Clay (later to become Muhammed Ali). The two built up an instant rapport and many years later, Bingham went on to write arguably the definitive book on Ali, Muhammed Ali: A 30-Year Journey.

His primary fame though, lies in the field of photography where he's contributed many times to leading magazines and periodicals including: Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, People, Ebony and others.

Bingham was also the first black photographer to work on a Hollywood camera Guild crew.
