Louis Aubinar, a humble natured, middle-aged photographer, specializes on religious pictures and works for Norbert, who is a prestigious religious articles curator, lancing among other, a series of pictures of Saints. His last venture was St. Francis, with Louis having to fight to get the actor and (live) animals to do their job well. Now Norbert decides to discard their next project, John the Baptist, and move directly to Jesus. Louis, being already in a poor economical state, is facing the prospect of being fired, if he doesn't come up soon with an appropriate model for Jesus. He lives in a small apartment with his psychotic sister, Elizabeth, who cooks for him terrible meals. His friend Zalman, who was supposed to pose as John the Baptist, cares less for his lost job by Norbert's but is very worried, since his recent case of flu will make him loose esteem in a film dubbing job. He asks Louis to do him the favor of doing his part until he gets well. In spite of his terrible situation, Louis goes to this job, which turns out to be a studio dubbing porno films. In a shock, he takes his place near Sybil, as the sequence starts running. His shocked situation turns out to brings such an intense vocal (and real) orgasm, that makes Sybil very impressed and so they get to meet. Louis introduces himself as Zalman, still covering his friend's absence.

Sybil tells Louis the story of her last unfortunate relation, with a passionate but also delusional Pianist who worked for a while in the same restaurant she worked as service in. A girl having her birthday party at the restaurant offered her good watch, so that Sybil would make the Pianist put a smile on, while he played. She had been getting passionate with his playing and this incident brought them very close, when a Violinist walked suddenly in and stole her passion with his play. The Pianist burst out in a fit of rage, which ended up in his imprisonment. And now was the time when he would get out. Louis, moved by her story, borrows her money to buy a good suit for him and promises to be there with her at the prison gates. Yet Sybil's grandfather has been very ill and a complication makes Sybil miss their meeting at the prison gates, so Louis follows the wrong person. Later he sees the suit returned back to the shop's window. By a stroke of fate, the Pianist finds Norbert's card and arrives there in a downpour of rain. Louis finds the perfect Jesus in him and helps him get a very well-paying contract from Norbert.

Louis is making the best pictures of his career with the Pianist as Jesus (who gives various names to himself, including Frederic Chopin). Life becomes complicated for the Pianist, as people who have seen his posters as Jesus start meeting him in public. By another stroke of fate, he is forced to try to cure a Blind Boy, by some Old Ladies in a park, and during his pretended concentration, a golf ball hits the boy on the head, who regains his sight. In doubt of his very own person, the Pianist starts taking himself for Jesus. Through friendly conversations with Louis, he also starts understanding that Louis is disclosing him his feelings for the same Sybil he had known. Meanwhile, Sybil returns the money, but to the real Zalman, who happens to be too sick to open the door. Still trying to locate Louis (as "Zalman"), she arrives at Norbert's, who has just fired the Pianist. As the Pianist sees Sybil talking to Norbert, he attacks Louis in a fit of rage, who is still completely unaware of his former relation with Sybil.

Finally, the Pianist identifying himself with Jesus tries to walk on the water and is drowned in the river. Louis still carries his ashes in an urn, as Sybil finds him again and the film ends with the two of them getting close with each other again. Yet at the very end, Sybil sees that he ("Zalman" still) is wearing the very watch that she was once given.
