[edit] Overview
Hot Pursuit 2 draws primarily from the gameplay and style of Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit; its emphasis was on evading the police and over-the-top tracks featuring lengthy shortcuts.
Even though the game allowed players to play as the police, the pursuit mode was drastically less realistic than preceding versions of NFS, as players merely needed to "tap" a speeder a certain number of times to arrest them, as opposed to using actual police tactics, such as spinning the offending driver, as well as utilizing spike strips to immobilize a speeding vehicle (as in real life).
For the multiplayer mode of the PC version, GameSpy's internet matchmaking system was used in place of local area network (LAN) play. Hot Pursuit 2 is also the first Need for Speed to forego an original instrumental rock/techno soundtrack in favour of songs sung by licensed song artists under the EA Trax label. The game is also the first in the series to lack an in-car cockpit view that was available in preceding Need for Speed titles.
While well-received by the press, it lacked the realism and sheer depth of Porsche Unleashed. Strangely, different versions of the game were produced for each system; the best version, according to the gaming press, was the PlayStation 2 version, with the Xbox, GameCube and PC versions generally considered inferior. (EA Seattle did those versions, and they were not ports of the PS2 version which was developed by Black Box Games.) Also, it did not feature a career mode where you can customize cars. Instead, there is a point system where you buy cars from winning races. Points are determined by laps led and finishing position. In the Championship and Hot Pursuit trees, you get extra points if you get a medal, decided by the requirments. For example, a sprint (see setion below) would give you 5000 points if you get the gold, 4000 for silver, and 2500 for bronze, etc. Points would give you types of tracks to race on, cars, police cars, etc.
[edit] Types of Modes
[edit] Single Race
Like all NFS games, this mode is from 2-8 players racing on any course, with more customizations, like how many laps, traffic on/off, hot pursuit on/off, etc.
[edit] Types of races in NFS HP 2
All types of modes can only have a certain class of cars to be used. Faster cars are used near the end of the Championship and Hot pursuit modes.
[edit] Delivery
- A timed point-to-point dash, with the police in pursuit.
[edit] Sprint
- A long track to get from one end to the other before your opponent.
[edit] Time Trial
- 3 laps on a level. Goal is to beat the required time to get the gold/silver/bronze.
[edit] Knockout
- Last person to finish after each lap is knocked out (eliminated) until one remains.
[edit] Tournament
- A number of levels, in which you win by earning the most points at the end of the tournament (by winning races). Gold, silver, and bronze places award different amounts of points.
[edit] Single Race
- A regular race, with a specified number of laps.
[edit] Be The Cop
- The player chooses one of several "Pursuit" vehicles, and must damage an enemy car (another player or computer) so much that it is disabled. The player can call for assistance in the form of a vehicular road block, helicopter backup (which drops bombs), or a spike strip to be set. After time is up, you will be awarded a medal based on the quota of vehicles the player disabled.
[edit] Championship/Hot Pursuit
- The goal here is to the bottom of a racing 'tree'. You first start off at a time trial. Once you beat that, you will have 2 options. Then you continue on from there until all the races are completed with a bronze/silver/gold.
[edit] Cheats
In the PC version of the game, one can use a text editor to alter gameplay. For example, it is possible to change your acceleration speed and unlock cars & tracks without earning them.
