Hotu Matu'a was the first ariki (king) of Rapa Nui, toward the century IV of our era.

It is said that thanks to that Make-make was appeared in a dream to Hau-Maka, the King Hotu Matu'a knew that it was destined to travel toward the Mata ki te Rangi (Eyes that look to the Sky); is to say to the Easter Island.

The king and their people would have traveled from Hiva (a mythical land) that some peoples have tried of identifying as the Marquesas Islands.
