"Hothead" is the third episode of the first season of the WB original series, Smallville. The episode was written by Greg Walker and directed by Greg Beeman. It originally aired on October 30, 2001.

Coach Walt Arnold (Dan Lauria), a win-at-any-cost football coach gains deadly powers from exposure to kryptonite in his sauna. He becomes able to cause rooms or people to be engulfed in flames at will.

Meanwhile Clark and Lana are going in opposite directions. Clark joins the Smallville High football team against his fathers wishes and Lana quits the cheerleading squad to work as a waitress at the Talon. Also, Chloe is investigating a cheating scandal involving several of the football teams members. A team member reluctantly tells Chloe that the Coach has threatened the team to keep quiet, using his pyrotechnic powers to set the football fields sprinklers on fire and intimidate his team. This leads Coach Arnold to turn violent after information implicating him in his player's cheating threatens his perfect season. Coach Arnold attempts to kill Clark and the Smallville High principal but Clark thwarts him. Clark then confronts the Coach but ends up locked in his sauna, unable to leave because of the kryptonite heating rocks.

Although Jonathan Kent doesn't support his son's decision to play football he goes to the game, purportedly to make sure Clark doesn't hurt anyone. When Clark doesn't appear on the field at the appropriate time, Jonathan looks for him, finding him in the sauna. Clark is then rescued from the sauna by his father and the Coach blows himself up trying to burn Clark.
