In the fictional universe of Star Wars, Hoth is the sixth planet of a remote system of the same name. It is a world covered in snow and ice, with numerous moons, and pelted by meteorites from a nearby asteroid belt. Native creatures include the wampa and the tauntaun. Its film location was set in Finse, Norway. Its origins are clearly an allusion to Hermann Hoth and his involvement with the blizzard-filled Battle of Stalingrad.

[edit] Planet overview
The Rebel Alliance relocated to Hoth after their victory in the Battle of Yavin. However, an Imperial probe droid discovered the base on Hoth, before being discovered itself and self destructing when attacked by Han Solo (Han recalled, "I didnt hit it that hard, it must have had a self destruct"). The Rebels, acting on this discovery, immediately began preparations to leave. However Darth Vader's Death Squadron arrived in time to intercept them, forcing the Rebels into combat in order to cover their escape. Although the Empire won the Battle of Hoth by destroying the Rebel base and capturing many Rebel personnel and equipment, the Rebels didn't attempt a full-scale defense, but rather worked to stall the Empire's forces long enough to stage an effective evacuation. Since the Rebels did successfully evacuate vital leadership and most personnel and equipment, the Empire failed to do more than stall the Rebels' plans.
The action on Hoth features prominently in the opening of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and is one of the Star Wars series' most memorable sequences.
Hoth is an example of the science-fictional stereotype of a planet that has only one climatic zone. However, some Expanded Universe sources show that underground caves containing large lichen fields exist on the planet, on which Tauntauns feed.
[edit] Lord Hoth
Lord Hoth is also the name of a famous Jedi Master who led the Army of Light against Lord Kaan's Brotherhood of Darkness during the Battle of Ruusan.
It is likely that his name is connected with that of the planet, but it is not known if the planet is named for him or the other way around.
[edit] Star Wars: Battlefront
Hoth's Echo Base is depicted as a level in the Star Wars: Battlefront videogame. The level only features combat between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. During single-player "story" mode, the story is told from the Imperials' point of view. In "galactic conquest" mode, Hoth is the Rebels' base planet. In single-player "instant action" mode, Hoth is similar to Geonosis, Kamino, and Endor, in that it only has one playable level (Echo Base) and only the era shown in the "historical campaign" (Rebels vs. Empire) can be played.
In single-or multi-player mode on the Echo Base-map, the Rebels can fight on the ground, using icy trenches for cover and attempting to take the Empire's remote command post. However the presence of the Empire's powerful AT-AT and AT-ST vehicles makes this difficult. Another popular option is to take control of a snowspeeder. With another person in the craft to launch a tow rope, the speeder can entangle the legs of the AT-AT, similar to the strategy used in the Star Wars movies.
The Empire players can also fight as ground troops, or as pilots of the AT-AT and AT-ST vehicles. The primary goal of the Imperial forces is to destroy the shield generator, which the Rebels also try to defend. Defeating the snowspeeders is usually key to winning this map in multi-player mode, since without a weapon to destroy the AT-AT's, the Rebels are constantly on the defensive.
The Rebels begin the map with five command posts: Bunker, Outpost, Control, Echo Base, and Shield Generator. The Empire begins with Forward Camp, and two AT-AT vehicle spawn points.
The Rebels begin with access to snowspeeders, and Tauntaun. The Empire has AT-AT and AT-ST vehicles.
The map itself is a large, snow-covered area with plenty of open space. The Rebels begin with icy dugouts throughout their territory, to take cover from enemy fire. There are also ice caves that link the Bunker, Echo Base, and Control command points. The Empire's lone stationary command point has several turrets for defense.
[edit] Star Wars Battlefront 2
The Star Wars Battlefront 2 version of Hoth is almost the same as the original. The changes are:
1. There are only 4 capturable command posts.
2. Both factions start with 2 capturable command posts.
3. The Tunnels from the outpost to the shield generator have been removed.
4. The map is slightly bigger.
5. The command post named "Command" has been removed.
