Hotel Waverly
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hotel Waverly is located on the northwest corner of Spadina Avenue and College Street in Toronto. The white-washed four storey hotel is located in Toronto's Chinatown next to landmarks The Silver Dollar Room and The Scott Mission. Its proximity to the homeless shelter has kept rental rates low, attracting prostitution, illicit drug trade and organized crime. Sometimes referred to as a "flop house", The Waverly's interior rooms are kept in a perpetual state of squalor and disrepair. The inability of management to raise capital for improvements coupled with entrenched criminal activity has made it difficult for the hotel to halt the cycle of dereliction. This less than ideal accommodation does provide low-cost housing benefiting Toronto's transient community.
The Hotel's central location close to major attractions such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, Queen's Park, The Royal Ontario Museum and Kensington Market make it a prime target for redevelopment. It enjoys convenient proximity to major transit routes, 506 Carlton Streetcar and 510 Spadina LRT.
