"Hotchkiss" (ホチキス) is also the generic name for office staplers in Japan and Korea, probably deriving from the brand name stamped on the stapler, in much the same way as "Hoover" is used as a generic name for vacuum cleaners in the UK. The name derives from an American company named E H Hotchkiss which made staplers. [1]
