The 2006 Festival ran from 28 April to 7 May and featured more than 100 films from around the world. The film festival was started in 1993 by the Canadian Independent Film Caucus, a national association of independent documentary filmmakers.

Hot Docs' Executive Director is Chris McDonald, Managing Director Brett Hendrie, and Director of Programming Sean Farnel. Much of the festival's success can also be credited to the logistical support rendered by scores of volunteers every year.
