Hot Chip are a British electro-pop band, who have been described as "the bedroom Neptunes". [1] Their debut album, Coming On Strong, was released in 2004. Band member Al Doyle comes from Leeds and the others are from London.

The band have played many live shows, including appearances at Glastonbury, Sónar, Benicassim, Electric Picnic, Bestival, the Reading and Leeds Festivals and the Summer Sundae festival, in 2005 and/or 2006, and have played several North American, European and UK tours over the last three years. They have had two UK top forty singles - "Over and Over" in March 2006 and "Boy from School" in May 2006. They received plaudits for the music video for "Over and Over", which was directed by Nima Nourizadeh.

The band's 2003-04 domestic releases were on Moshi Moshi. They are now signed to EMI in the UK and dance-punk label DFA Records in the U.S.

Their second album The Warning was one of the nominees for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize.

In 2006 Hot Chip was invited by Toronto indie rock label Paper Bag Records to exclusively contribute to their See You on the Moon! Songs for Kids of All Ages compilation with their song "I Can't Wake Up".

[edit] Members

[edit] Alexis Taylor – vocals, keyboards

Taylor met bandmate Joe Goddard at secondary school, where they claim to have collided during an impromptu wrestling match on the school playground. They went on to become firm friends and started to make music when they were 17.

Taylor is deeply influenced by Prince and practices a peculiar mode of composition. When he travels by tube or bus, he often taps new lyrics into his mobile phone as a text message.

Taylor studied English at Jesus College, Cambridge from 1999-2002, during which time Hot Chip played a variety of gigs (with various line-ups) around Cambridge's live music venues.

[edit] Joe Goddard – vocals, synthesizer, percussion

Joe Goddard is the vocalist and synthesizer operator for Hot Chip. He is also responsible for much of Hot Chip's home studio production. When Goddard was 12, he met bandmates Alexis Taylor and Owen Clarke at secondary school. Goddard became very good friends with Taylor and they eventually started making music. Goddard grew up listening to hip hop records in the early 1990s and some big influences are Souls of Mischief and Madlib.

He and Taylor write lyrics for Hot Chip.

[edit] Al Doyle – guitar, synthesizer, vocals

Al 'Do-it' Doyle plays the guitar and synthesizer for Hot Chip. He also contributed backing vocals for the song 'Colours' on the album The Warning. Generally he is willing and able to play anything that be can lay his hands on, leading to his nickname Al 'Do-It'. He has a background as a classical cellist.

Alongside Felix Martin and Owen Clarke, Al is the powerhouse behind some of Hot Chip's infamous remixes. This includes reworks of bands such as MIA, Mattafix, Placebo, Radio 4, Battle and Jim Noir.

Al first discovered Nirvana on a school exchange to Hannover, Germany in 1994. He promptly returned to the UK and devoted his life to music, big hair and S-level Buddhism. Al attended the same school as Ricky Wilson, lead singer of the Kaiser Chiefs.

[edit] Owen Clarke – synthesizer, guitar

[edit] Felix Martin – drum machines

[edit] Rob Smoughton (former member)

Now of one-man synth-soul outfit Grovesnor, Rob has since supported his former band on tour
