[edit] Transport System

Hoppers Crossing is serviced by a Hoppers Crossing Railway Station situated to the South of the suburb, on the Werribee Line. An increasing number of bus routes service the surrounding area. A tramway was proposed for the Hoppers Crossing - Werribee area to replace bus services, however, it was deemed unfeasible by the City of Wyndham.

[edit] History

Until 1963, Hoppers Crossing's only notable feature was a general store. In 1963 the town started to take shape, the first subdivision of residential land taking place. Growth of Hoppers Crossing followed into the 1970s. Hoppers Crossing's first shopping centre was built, called Woodville Park. In 1970, the area's first primary school, Mossfiel Primary School, had its first student intake.

In 1981, Hoppers Crossing Shopping Centre opened. This included a Target store, and 10 other stores. Between the years 1980 and 1994, Hoppers Crossing experienced a period of great growth, with the population growing nearly five times in size (from 8,500 to 40,000 people).

Werribee Plaza opened in the late 1980s. It was modernised between 2000 and 2006. Several significant redesigns and extensions have been built. Another shopping centre was built on Sayers Road in 2005, and is quickly expanding.

[edit] Education

There are currently six state primary schools in existence (Bellbridge, Derrimut Heath, The Grange Primary Campus, Mossfiel, Woodville and Cambridge) and two state secondary colleges (Hoppers Crossing Secondary College and The Grange Secondary Campus). There are two Catholic primary schools: St Peter Apostle and St James, and a Catholic Regional Secondary College: Thomas Carr College. Other religious schools include an Islamic College (Prep to Year 12,) Heathdale Christian College. There is one independent school, Westbourne Grammar (Prep to Year 12), though Westbourne is disputably in Trugunania. This is a campus of Williamstown Grammar School, located in Williamstown, Victoria.

[edit] Entertainment

In Hoppers Crossing, there has been a nightclub at the Werribee Plaza, Volt, for some time and in recent years a cinema was built at 'the plaza'. Also, there is a skate park in the area and numerous offroad bike tracks. There are a number of clubs for those interested in sport. Recreation for young people is hampered by a relatively poor transport system, but for younger children in the area there is the Wonderland Indoor Play Centre, near the Bible College and next to Hoppers indoor-sports were there are indoor soccer teams operating.

Hoppers Crossing has relatively high unemployment. This is often speculated as being due to the area having such a large population of people under 15 and new migrants.

[edit] Sports

Hoppers Crossing has many gyms and sports grounds. There are facilities for tennis, soccer, Australian football, basketball, netball and more. In 2004 part of the Federation Trail was in Hoppers Crossing for cycling. A new soccer complex was built at the Grange for the Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club. They previously played at Mossfield Reserve which is now a rugby field.

Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club [1]was formed in 1977 and its first team was entered into the “B turf" section of the Sunshine Cricket Association in season 1977/78. The result in the club's first season was runners-up.

Junior cricket was introduced and teams were entered into a local Under 14 competition in the Wyndham area.

At the commencement of the 1983/84 season, the club transferred into the Williamstown and District Cricket Association (WDCA). This was in conjunction with the club’s move from its prior residence, in Heaths Road, to its current Hogans Road address. Shortly after this move, a turf wicket was installed on the number one oval with the assistance of the then Werribee Council.

Season 1986/87 saw the appointment of the club’s first ever coach, Greg Evans. In his first year at the helm, Greg took the club to the runners-up position.

At the commencement of the 1989/90 season, the club took its next evolutionary step by entering their first and second elevens into the Victorian Junior Cricket Association (now the Victorian Turf Cricket Association (VTCA)). During this season under the coaching of Mark Mitchell, the club won its first ever First XI premiership, in the North Central Division. Since that time, the club has gained promotion into North A through to its current grade, Senior A.

Since the commencement of the club, seven First XI District Players have been produced, four at Footscray (Mark Mitchell, Jamie Rubeli, Grant Burns, Paul Murray), two at North Melbourne (Trent Said, Ian Timms) and Greg Kennedy (University). Two of these players have represented Victoria (Mark Mitchell in the Under 19’s and Paul Murray in the Under 21’s). HCCC have also had one of their British youngsters, Stuart Broad [2], go on and play First Class Cricket for Leicestershire and also play 5 One Day Internationals against Pakistan during the last NatWest Series.

Currently Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club fields 8 senior turf sides and 12 junior teams and has won 51 premierships across both junior and senior teams in 28 years of cricket. The club is the largest turf cricket club in Victoria and one of the largest junior clubs in the State.
