[edit] Location and History
A small brewery sited in Downton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, founded by John and Julie Gilbert. Beer was first brewed in 1986 at the Wyndham Arms in Salisbury, and moved to larger premises in Downton six years later. As of 2005, Hop Back owns eleven public houses around the south of England and has an annual production of more than 10,000 barrels.
[edit] Notable Draught Beers
- GFB - Gilbert's First Brew (named after the brewer and current Chairman of the brewery, John Gilbert) is a 3.5% session bitter.
- Summer Lightning - The company's flagship brew is a 5.0% summer ale, which manages to sell incredibly well throughout the year.
- Crop Cirlce - A 4.2% beer with the inclusion of flaked maize early on in the brewing process giving the brew a corn-tinged flavour and hence providing the name.
- Entire Stout - A 4.5% stout, suitable for vegans.
- Odyssey - Hop Back's 4.0% best bitter.
- Thunderstorm - A 5.0% English wheat beer.
- Winter Lightning - A seasonal brew which is rather pale compared to traditional winter ales but still keeping the distinctive spiced flavour one associates with winter brews.
[edit] Notable Bottled Beers
- Summer Lightning - Unsurprisingly the most popular beer is also available bottle conditioned.
- Crop Circle - Another popular brew also available bottled, for one's home-drinking pleasure.
- Entire Stout - After winning several awards, including taking the runner-up position of 'Beer of the Festival' at the 2001 Great British Beer Festival, this beer has also been released in a bottle. However the bottle conditioned version is slightly stronger at 5.0%
- Taiphoon - A crisp pale ale brewed with the addition of lemongrass and coriander.
