Hongdae

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An area to the northwest of central Seoul, Hongdae (홍대) takes its name from Hongik Daehakgyo or Hongik University. The area is home to hundreds of bars, restaurants, boutiques and nightclubs and draws revellers from a wide range of backgrounds, with university students and English teachers the main demographics. Most bars are open long into the night and Hongdae is the official home of the W1800 ($1.80) tequila shot. Many foreigners prefer Hongdae to Itaewon given its relative lack of prostitutes and seediness compared to the traditional foreigners district, while it also attracts less US military personnel and African immigrants than Itaewon.

[edit] Events

The highlight of each month (last fridays) in Hongdae is "Club Day", a wristband-powered event which allows entry to more than a dozen clubs for the price of one.

"Sound Day" is the independent music version of "Club Day" that happens on the 2nd Friday.

Every Saturday (except in winter) the Free Markets are held in the playground opposite the university. It's a fledgeling craft market of things made by students and recent graduates. A smaller version happens on Sundays.

[edit] Transport

The area is served by subway via Sangsu Station (line 6) and Hongik University Station (line 2), and various buses.
