[edit] History

It was founded in 1937 as the Government Trade School in Wanchai. After World War II, in 1947, it became the Hong Kong Technical College and in 1957, the college moved to its new campus at its current site.

August 1, 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic was established with the campus and staff of the college transferred to it. The college offered diploma and higher diploma courses for the secondary school graduates. This provided another choice for students other than getting into HKU or CUHK at that time.

November 25, 1994, the institution was granted its full university status. However, it still offered Higher Diploma and Diploma. Mr. Poon said, "Polytechnic can be University" as there is an University, which located somewhere in USA, having the name "US Polytechnic University.

Early 1997, Mr. Poon decided to cut off Mathematics Department and deduced the course of food science. The reason was funny. "If polyu is unable to expand the class size of Occupational Therapy, Governor would accept CUHK to offer a similar course. So, it will cause all better students going to CUHK rather than POLYU", Mr. Poon said that.

Besides, Mr. Poon said, "It doesn't matter there is no Mathematics Major in POLYU because Mathematics is not a Major concern in POLYU." "A few years later, POLYU will become credit-base. So there are about 5 students graduated on Mathematics. Therefore lack of development in Mathematics is not a problem in a Polytechnic University".

July 1999, The School of Professional Education and Executive Development, SPEED was established in order to provide professional further educational courses for adults.

August 2000, HKCyberU was established. This was the frist cyber U in Hong Kong which providing the online study courses.

2002, The Hong Kong Community College, HKCC was established to offer associate degree. On October 2, there were 11,273 of PolyU staffs, students and alumni came together and broke the Guinness World Records of audience wave rainbow at that time. This was not only to cerebrate the 65th anniversary of the University, but also to raise funds for The Childhood Cancer Fundation and The Hong Kong Society for the Aged.

January 2004, the onset of phase seven and phase eight.

The time about this period, Mr. Poon said he was, not alike, a beggar responding to the policy of matching fund from government.

September 2005, Y core started to serve students and the phase seven campus almost completed.

April 2006, the University "sold" the naming right and the Y core named after Dr Lee Shau Kee.

Nowadays, PolyU offered about 200 bachelor degree to mainland students every year. Undergraduates either go for postgraduate programs in other brillant universities worldwide or participate in their own fields in commercial companies and have outstanding achievements.

Mr. Poon not only sells the name of buildings or rooms. He also sells the name of the trees at campus. Today he is going to selling the name of the "red brick". How marvelous is connecting Hong Kong Trade School with HKPU, ever red brick!

Lead by Mr. Poon 16 years, HKPU still trains up many many outstanding people. It reflects Hong Kong being a most important commerical center on the World. Mr. Poon is suitable for being CEO, even CE of Hong Kong rather than be a Professor, a teacher or even private tutor. Letting him be a leader at campus is wasting his life.

On 1st December, 2006, Mr. Poon was begging the money for POLYU's student or his housing allowance from donald tsang in ceremony again.

Hopeful, he can learn in life-time being a human-being with culture.
