Holly Short is a fictional character, a LEPrecon officer in the Artemis Fowl children's book series.
Holly Short is an elf with an auburn crewcut and hazel eyes (At the end of Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony she has one blue eye and one hazel eye due to a complication returning to her own dimension), pointy ears (like all elves) and a chatty mouth. She is only one centimeter under three feet (exactly one meter altogether), one centimeter below the average height for a fairy, and has a gymnast-like stance. She also has a good sense of humor that accompanies her cockiness. She is around eighty years old - reasonably young by fairy standards. Not much is known about Holly's family, except that she lost her father at a young age (for a fairy - she was around sixty years old at the time), and that she is the great-granddaughter of Cupid.
She was abducted by the twelve-year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II in the first book of the series when he uncovered evidence of the existence of fairies. She is the first female in Recon under the command of Commander Julius Root. Root becomes like a father to her. She is a great shuttle pilot, a quick thinker, and a true policewoman. After Root was killed in an explosion set up by Opal Koboi she is suspected of the ex-Commander's murder and is almost held under custody until Wing Commander Vinyaya, who usually defends Holly, and Foaly convince the council that she is in fact innocent. Holly resigns when she finds Ark Sool is the new Commander, and she and Mulch Diggums now ran a private investigation agency until Holly was recruited into Section 8, the fairy equivalent of MI5 or other secret organization by Wing Commander Vinyaya. Foaly joined the organisation too, and takes great delight in an almost unlimited budget, which he uses to equip Holly with every device and piece of equipment he can think of.
Her best friends are Foaly, Major Trouble Kelp and Commander Julius Root, until Root was killed by Opal Koboi. She also became friends with Artemis Fowl after many adventures, and currently maintains secret communication with him. Artemis became a consultant for her P.I agency. At the end of the fifth book, thanks to inconsistencies of dimension and time travel, Holly and Artemis find they have exchanged eyes, each has one hazel and one blue eye.
Her hobbies are reading, playing crunch ball, and, like most fairies, flying.
Holly is described as pretty in two different ways: pointy, and like a black widow (with coffee-brown skin). In the second book Chix Verbil, a sprite who thinks he is God's gift to the ladies, tries to impress Holly but she ends up saving his wings after he is shot by a goblin in a B'wa Kell flyby. Many of Holly's co-officers admired her even though she was a "rebel officer", and many of them were sorry to see her resign (especially Foaly), but they knew she would be happier free; Commander Sool would have monitored her too carefully.
In the fifth book, The Lost Colony, Holly is shown in the first chapter as one of the fully-fledged partners in the PI agency she and Mulch Diggums founded. However, later on, she gets recruited into Section Eight, something that;s qyute similar to the LEP. Commander Vinyaya and Foaly are both in Section Eight, too. It is as a Section Eight captain that Holly helps Artemis and friends in helping to rescue No1.
