Holly Jones
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Holly Jones (September 14, 1992 – May 12, 2003) was a Canadian girl who was kidnapped from her Toronto neighbourhood on May 12, 2003. On the next day, May 13, her body was found in parts inside bags off the shores of Toronto Island. The case was changed from a kidnapping to a murder case.
DNA evidence led the police to arrest Michael Briere, a software developer who lived in the neighbourhood and had no previous criminal history. Briere confessed to sexually assaulting Holly, killing her, and dismembering her body. He attributed his actions to viewing child pornography, which he said was very easily attainable. After pleading guilty to a crime he himself described as "cruel, inhuman, and nightmarish," Briere received an automatic life sentence and will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.
Jones' parents, Maria Jones and George Stonehouse, have joined the fight against child pornography.
Three Private Member's Bills were introduced in November 2004 (bills C-254, C-292, C-303) which increase penalties for distributing, making, selling, etc. of child pornography, and requests the help of Internet service providers in the fight against child pornography.
