Hollinwood

Hollinwood is a district and electoral ward in the town of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. It is within the 5% most economically deprived wards in the United Kingdom.[1]

Hollinwood has a large proportion of social housing and faces some challenges on its road to regeneration. Although the district of Hollinwood has a rich industrial history the mass of post war council housing stock in the ward, including the Limeside estate (locally referred to as 'Crimeside'), does little for the areas reputation.

With the area initially being occupied by workers in Oldham's cotton mills, much of Hollinwood's more recent growth potential was due to the Ferranti factory which produced transformers in its heyday. Later the factory produced container lifting trucks as the building had the height to do so.

Hollinwood was home to the Roxy Cinema which was popular for both the local and wider community. However, the cinema closed in 2005 after years of falling attendance, and left the entire Metropolitan Borough of Oldham without a cinema complex. The local Council bought the premises and promised to relocate the Cinema, although no plans to do so have been announced.

The Hollinwood Branch Canal passes through the district.

Today, the area of Hollinwood has been changed substantially by the construction of the M60 motorway which takes the southern route around the city of Manchester and was completed in 2000. More construction is occurring recently with the building of the Byron Apartment Block and the planned building of several private 2/3/4 bedroom houses in the area.

Hollinwood was once a chapelry of the ecclesiastical parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham.
