The Lesser Earless Lizard (Holbrookia maculata) is a species of Phrynosomid lizard found in the southwestern and central United States, in the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming, as well as throughout most of Mexico in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí and Nuevo León.

There are nine recognized subspecies of Holbrookia maculata, many of which in the past held full species status:

  • Northern Earless Lizard, Holbrookia maculata maculata (Girard, 1851)
  • Eastern Earless Lizard, Holbrookia maculata perspicua (Axtell, 1956)
  • Huachuca Earless Lizard, Holbrookia maculata pulchra (Schmidt, 1921)
  • Bleached Earless Lizard, Holbrookia maculata ruthveni (Smith, 1943)
  • Western Earless Lizard, Holbrookia maculata thermophila (Barbour, 1921)
