Hokuten'yū Katsuhiko
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hokuten'yū Katsuhiko (北天佑勝彦?) (August 8, 1960–June 23, 2006) was a sumo wrestler. Born in Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan, he was promoted to ozeki, the highest rank he achieved, as a result of winning the May 1983 tournament with a 14-1 record. He wrestled as an ozeki in 44 tournaments. This figure places him third (as of July 2006) in number of tournaments as an ozeki, behind Takanohana Kenshi and Chiyotaikai Ryuji.
He also won the July 1985 tournament.
Hokuten'yū was a famous giant killer. His victory by yorikiri against the 210 kg Konishiki in the November 1984 tournament helped cement that reputation.
Hokuten'yū withdrew from the September 1990 tournament and retired from wrestling, becoming head of the Hatachiyama-beya. He died of cancer of the kidney at age 45. This left the heya without a master, and eleven wrestlers transferred to the Kitanoumi-beya. Among them is Hakurozan Yuuta.
