Hochschild Kohn's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hochschild Kohn's was a large department store in Baltimore, Maryland, with a downtown store located at the northwest corner of Howard and Lexington Streets. Hochschild's expanded to the suburbs in 1947, opening a store at Edmondson Village, and then a store in the northern suburbs in 1948 at York and Belvedere. Later suburban stores included: Towson, Maryland, Perring Parkway, Harford Mall, the Mall in Columbia, Security Square Mall, Harundale Mall, Reisterstown Road Plaza, Easton, Maryland, and Bowie, Maryland. Contraction began in the 1970s, with the Columbia store becoming a Hecht Company store in 1975 and the downtown store closing in 1977 (and burning in a fire in 1983). The downtown location was used for a new Hutzler's store during the 1980s, but that, too, failed when Hutzler's went out of business in the late 1980s.

The chain tried to move into the discount store space, transforming some stores into Hochschild's Value City, but in the end that was unsuccessful.
