HMS Byard (K315)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HMS Byard was a Buckley class destroyer escort originally built for the US Navy. She was laid down by Bethlehem Hingham, Hingham, Massachusetts in October 1942, launched on 6 March 1943 and subsequently sent to Britain under the Lend-Lease agreement.

Designated as a Royal Navy Captain class frigate, she was renamed HMS Byard after Sir Thomas Byard, who had commanded HMS Bedford at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797.

She saw service on escort duties for the Atlantic convoys as part of Escort Group 4 (EG4) under the command of Lieutenant-Commander E.M. Ferris RNVR.

In October 1943, HMS Byard was escorting an Atlantic convoy which was attacked by a wolf pack of 16 U-boats. During the ensuing battle, HMS Byard sank U-841.

Returned to the US Navy in December 1945, HMS Byard was broken up and sold for scrap during 1946.
