HMAS Penguin

Three ships and two shore establishments of the Royal Australian Navy have been named HMAS Penguin:

  • The first Penguin was a composite sloop originally commissioned by the Royal Navy, before being transferred to the RAN in 1913 as a depot ship.
  • The second Penguin was a light cruiser originally named Encounter that was renamed Penguin in 1923.
  • The third Penguin was a submarine depot ship built for the Royal Navy before transferring to the RAN as HMAS Platypus in 1919 and renamed Penguin on 16 August 1929. The ship was renamed Platypus in 1941.
  • The fourth Penguin was the name given to the Naval depot in Darwin at the outbreak of World War II, which was subsequently formally commissioned as HMAS Melville on August 1, 1940.
  • The fifth Penguin was the name given to the RAN's main naval base in Sydney, until it was renamed Kuttabal in 1943.
  • The current Penguin is one of the RAN's major training establishments, located in Balmoral.
