Two ships of the Royal Australian Navy have been named for the city of Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.
The first HMAS Launceston [1] (J-179/B-246/A-120) was a Bathurst class corvette built by Evans Deakin and Company at Brisbane in Queensland, launched on 30 June 1941 by Mrs. W. Forgan-Smith, wife of the premier of Queensland, and commissioned on 9 April 1942. HMAS Launceston paid off on 23 March 1946, was transferred to the Turkish Navy and renamed Ayancik.
The second HMAS Launceston [2] (P-207) is a Fremantle class patrol boat laid down by the North Queensland Engineers and Agents at Cairns in Queensland on 29 March 1980, launched on 23 January 1981 and commissioned on 6 March 1982. The Launceston was decommissioned in Darwin on 8 September 2006.[3]
The S class destroyer HMS Tasmania, transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in July 1919, was to be renamed HMAS Launceston but this was rescinded on 11 June 1920 and the ship retained its original name.
