HMAS Geelong

Two ships of the Royal Australian Navy have been named for the city of Geelong in Victoria.

The first HMAS Geelong (J-201) was a Bathurst class corvette laid down by the Melbourne Harbour Trust at Williamstown in Victoria on 16 October 1940, launched on 22 April 1941 by Lady Dugan, wife of the Governor of Victoria, and commissioned on 16 January 1942. HMAS Geelong collided with the American tanker York and sank north of Langemak in New Guinea on 18 October 1944. No lives were lost.


The second HMAS Geelong (P-215) was a Fremantle class patrol boat laid down by the North Queensland Engineers and Agents at Cairns in Queensland on 15 November 1982, launched on 14 April 1984 and commissioned on 2 June 1984. Geelong was decommissioned at HMAS Coonawarra on 8 July 2006.
