Template talk:Histpop

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This template accepts up to 30 year-population-percent sets. You may use either the vertical or horizontal format when using this template. Vertical is generally easier to read.

The percent change column is not automatically calculated because there are sometimes gaps in the available data (for example, no census was taken in 1890) so the percent change should not be included. To calculate the percent change, take the population for a given year, subtract the population of the previous census, and then divide by the population of the previous census. Spreadsheet software can help you make these calculations quickly.

The column header "Pop." is used instead of "Population" because places with low populations do not need a wide Population column. Using "Pop." helps save space for these uses.

There is an optional "footnote" element that can be used to put a comment or footer at the end of the table.

[edit] Possible Changes

All, I was looking this over and wondered what you thought of some color and slight reformatting? See attached... If I don't hear any feedback in the next week or so, I'll go ahead with these changes. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 02:38, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Not sure about the coloring, but I like the compactness. How about adding a ref for the numbers to the top? This is the site I was thinking of: [1] -Ravedave (help name my baby) 19:58, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Most of the pages using this template have had the years linked to the census page, 1810, for example. Would having a ref make the template too US-centric? - SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 23:46, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Adding that ref note would make the table more specific to U.S. states. It is better to leave it more generic for use with any location. —Mike 07:27, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:USCensusPop

After thinking about this, I decided there had to be an easier way to create census population tables requiring less manual work. I built the template Template:USCensusPop which only requires the census populations to be entered (example on the talk page). The template includes all of the census links in the template (instead of requiring them to be entered on each article) and uses parser functions to calculate the percentage change between each census. —Mike 04:36, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

NOW you create USCensusPop - after I've gone through the states alphabetically and am up to Vermont putting in HistPop! :)
Actually, while I can see the advantages, I think the trade-off of the more robust Histpop (allowing non-US population tables, allowing skipped years, etc) is worth the little bit more data entry. Just my US$0.02, though :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 05:02, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Sorry! I'll try to be faster next time. But I bet you haven't done all the cities yet. The new template doesn't require all the years to be added—you can skip any missing years. I'm not assuming that Histpop wouldn't still be used for non-US Census-based population tables, but it is nicer to have all those links consolidated into one easily updatable location. —Mike 08:45, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
