[edit] Incorrect Definition of History

The 'interpretation of records' is Historiography, not History. History is the interpretation of past events. Could an educated administrator please change it?

Bwahaha! "Educated administrator". Where do you come up with these things?

[edit] Color scheme

Could we get a different color scheme to the page? Seems a bit distasteful IMHO. Sincerely, JDR 21:39, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

I second that notion - Ravedave 14:48, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

I'm too in favour of a change. Any ideas on what colour should be used? Scoo 20:43, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Need volunteers to maintain portal

Why hasn't this been updated in so long? We need volunteers to maintain this portal. We especially need a featured section that isn't permanently Julius Caesar.

I can help a little.

Any volunteers?

Nick 02:21, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

I changed the selected article section to Italian Renaissance! Cheers!

[edit] Core topics -- Version 1.0

Hello. I'm part of Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Core topics working toward a release version of Wikipedia (on paper or CD).

If you're interested in helping, these are some related articles we plan to include:

If you think these are ready, please let us know. You can see our proposed initial quality standards or learn more about the overall project.

Thanks. Maurreen 21:26, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured articles

I noticed that this portal puts the featured articles into subpages such as, Portal:History/Featured article/April, 2006. In March, I added to my watchlist all the portal pages that are linked on the Main Page and their subpages (linked with the small "edit" buttons), to monitor for vandalism. I just now noticed the monthly featured article subpage was different than the one I put on my watchlist in March. Because of that, vandalism to Portal:History/Featured article/April, 2006 went unnoticed for 24 hours. I'd rather not have to come back each month to add new subpages, so would anyone object if the featured article stay in Portal:History/Featured article and not further subpages? Once they are archived, then I'm fine with moving them into the dated subpages. -Aude (talk | contribs) 19:43, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Unless someone is prepared to undertake this extra maintenance, then no. This sort of rotational/queue system, used also on the Main Page, is now common on portals. Perhaps the only way to mitigate this is to semiprotect the subpages on the main portals - something I've done in several places because I'm usually the only one monitoring them and I can't do that 24/7.--cj | talk 04:24, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Take a look at how Current events are managed. That's what I had in mind, where at the end of the month they move it to the monthly archive page. I don't have to go back at the beginning of each month and readd the Current events page to my watchlist. Maybe it's not the best solution for the portals, though. I think all the small "edit" links are problematic and too tempting to vandals. Semiprotection could work in this case. I looked over the past month's edit history for Portal:History, as an example, and all the anonymous edits appear to be vandalism. Though on Portal:Geography, there were two anons. that added interwiki links. -Aude (talk | contribs) 14:04, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
I'll just add that the History portal seems to be vandalized much more than any of the others, surely for the same reason that articles like French Revolution are constant targets. It seems to relate to what's on the school syllabus. Maybe sprotect is warranted in such cases of excessive vandalism, as the history portal seems to be. -Aude (talk | contribs) 20:11, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

At this moment, the short article main page on Yagan concludes with the following line: "To date, the head remains unburied. later on he would be ass raped by a chinese spider monkey." I am supposing that this was vandalism.

[edit] June selections

FYI, the selected article and selected picture need to be chosen for June. I will check back later today, and if selections still need to be made, I'll do them. But, I normally haven't been involved with this portal. -Aude (talk | contribs) 14:07, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

These are taken care of for June. -Aude (talk | contribs) 00:13, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Wikiproject: creating an historical atlas and improving historical maps

Perhaps such a project already exists. If not, then i hereby ask people who want to join to send me a message.

At the moment i am trying to make maps using GIMP. I produced one map ( see Lucius Paullus), but the problem is that i can't change colours using GIMP.

I like to make maps where texts link to Wikipedia articles, just like the map of Germany in the 2006_FIFA_World_Cup article.

I want to create maps that all link to sources (atlases and books) and give them a quality tag when the map is good. Also, i like to make alternative maps in order to show difference of opinion about the borders of countries and different ways of portraiting a certain historical situation. Theme maps could be made showing the aproximate size of the populations, religions, official religions, the presence of all kinds of culture.

An idea is to make maps for statesmen and generals, to show how the borders of countries changed and what famous conquests and battles occured during throughout their career.

The great thing about accurate maps is that they could be more accesible then a text and that it is simpler to get factual accuracy. In a text, the words can always be in a different order. The Geographical order is more solid.

I hope to get to some kind of organization within the project. Many projects on Wikipedia failed, because of the lack of discipline of the contributors. For me discipline is only a method to create quality, i don't have any political sympathy towards it.--Daanschr 10:04, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where to nominate articles to be selected

What page do I go to nominate an article? I would like History of Louisville, Kentucky to be considered. It is already a "good" article. Thanks. —  Stevie is the man!  Talk | Work 17:56, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't think anyone is actively maintaining this portal. I don't have the time to take on the task of maintaining yet another portal. Right now, the portal is set up for monthly featured articles. However, due to lack of maintainers, the same article has been featured since the beginning of June. You are more than welcome to right up a blurb for History of Louisville, Kentucky and set it up for August or whenever you want it featured. --Aude (talk contribs) 13:38, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Are you saying that I could write up the blurb and post it on the portal page myself? I can do that, certainly, but it feels strange doing that without a community saying "Yes, we approve". — Stevie is the man! TalkWork 14:57, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes, go ahead. It would be nice if there were a group of users maintaining this portal, but it's not the case right now. So, anyone that wants to update something, please do. --Aude (talk contribs) 23:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Need help with biographies

WikiProject Biography is currently working on a Core biographies list of the Top 150 people. We're worried we might be American-biased and need to get input from some non-Americans. See the page here and its Talk page and the criteria we're using is under the definition of Top. Thanks! plange 05:57, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Selected Article/Picture

Just wondering how selection works for the Selected Article and the Selected Picture... since there doesn't seem to be one for this month! Makes the portal look terrible with that blank void and the red text in the middle. How is this decided? Madder 19:24, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

The portal really doesn't have anyone maintaining it at the moment. Selected article and picture decisions can be done by anyone. It's my hope that someone (or a few people, or WikiProject) comes forward to look after the portal and make such updates regularly. For September, I went ahead and selected a FA, from Today's featured article archive, and a picture from POTD archives. But, selections still need to be made for October. --Aude (talk contribs as tagcloud) 19:36, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
OK I've created 2 suggest pages, one for articles, one for pictures - links are on the portal page. Hopefully they'll be used! Madder 19:52, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Maybe we can post notes on relevant Project talk pages about the new Suggest links... --plange 19:59, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
I wanted to suggest History of Louisville, Kentucky a while back, but I haven't gotten around to doing it just yet. I may move this up in priority now. Thanks. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:01, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
By the way, the "suggest" link goes to the archive page. Is that the proper page to suggest? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:05, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for that, that's a good point! Yep, fixed it now, my mistake. Madder 20:13, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Contnntious TfD

Hi, guys. Can you spend a few minutes and look on the Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion#Template:Turkish_History_Brief? This seems to be a very contentious TfD with most of the voters been either "pro-Turks" or "anti-Turks". A few opinions from uninvolved editors will make the decision much easier. Alex Bakharev 03:56, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Experts needed

A category for articles that need expert assistance from those with knowledge of Arts has been created and articles are being sorted into the category (Category:Pages needing expert attention from the History Portal). I would like to propose adding a reference to this on the portal page, perhaps in the Things You Can Do section so that those with expertise in History would be made aware of it and would have a link to it.

Make that Category:Pages needing expert attention from History experts. --Brad Beattie (talk) 12:21, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] History of Chaturvedis( Origin of Chaturvedi Brahmins)

Chaturvedi is an Indian family name (chatur = four, vedi = one who has learned the Vedas).

A brahmin family name indicating that the title bearer's forefathers were proficient in all of the four Vedas (including the vedic branch one is born into). This was considered a significant achievement and an elevated social status. Legend has it that it takes 16 human lives for one to master the four vedas, the holy books of unlimited knowledge. If one were to master all the vedas in one human life, that was indeed a super human achievement and therefore the title Chaturvedi.

Chaturvedis are also known as Mathur Chaturvedis. People who belonged to Mathura and know as 'Mathura Ke Choubey'. Among the Mathura ke Choubeys, there is one classification as 'Mithe'(sweet) and another as 'Kadwe'(bitter). Mithe choubey belongs to the group of people who negotiated peace with the Muslim invaders and left their colonies and chose to settle down some where else, Kadwe choubeys belong to the group who did not negotiate with the Muslim rulers and chose to stay back and fight for their home land by engageing in guerrila warfare with the invadersand therefore Kadwe (bitter)

Mathur Chaturvedis still have their roots in Mathura and they are all bound together by the Mathur Chaturvedi Mahasabha and usually they have get-togethers that comprise of Chaturvedis living in a particular city. Chaturvedi Sabhas ( meetings) of Kanpur and other cities of UP are famous for the large number of gatherings. Annual Mathur Chaturvedi Mahasbaha ( a very large gathering ) is held every year in Mumbai and prominent Chaturvedis, Chaturvedis from all over India and other personalities are invited to the meetings.

There are also some anecdotes as to how Chaturvedis came to India. One belief is that they were priests in Alexander's army who later decided to settle after his retreat. The pride and urge and fight in some ways could be attributed to such military ties. Some people also find physical features of Chaturvedis (fairer complexion, physical build) more akin to European roots. How ever which is a lot contradictry as their are evidences of chaturvedi wrestlers in Shoorshen's army also helped Shri Krishna getting their kingdom back and defeating Kansa. Their roots are also to be said long back during aryan culture and dissendent of some particular tirbe setteled in the foot hills of kashmir and River Indus(Todays Pakistan), after several invasions and search of food forced them to migrate once again in smaller groups and search for green pastures. Their traditions are difftrent but quite similar to Persions and Romans, as groups from same tribe have been said fleed away towards europe also. However not much is documented but still history speaks at times.

Some Chaturvedi's also keep other surnames like Mishra, Pathak, and Choubey.

Chaturvedi's major population is in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, but have moved to all the states and are present in all the states.

Being Brahmin, they are strict Vegetarians and usually they don't smoke and drink also. Chaturvedis are known for their unique traditions among the Brahmins and are usually fair skinned compared to other clans. The strict followers of Chaturvedi traditions don't have onions, garlic either.

As per marrigies are concerned they prefer not to marry strictly outside their community(i.e: Chaturvedi). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mohit.ch (talk • contribs) 09:58, 5 December 2006 (UTC). Similarly you have trivedi (knowing 3 vedas), Dwivedi (knowing 2 Vedas) etc.--Darrendeng 07:59, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

What's the point of this in relation to the history portal?Bobanny 06:29, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] vandalism

Is there something wacky with the portal main page? The history record says I blanked the feature article. What I blanked was this: [[Media: == YOU SUCK! == ]] I tried to revert back to the article that was there before 'you suck,' but couldn't find anything, so I just deleted it. Anyway, it looks like this page is regularly targeted, and has been for a while. Maybe it needs semi-protection? Bobanny 23:33, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
