Manipur was a sovereign country from 1947-49 with an elected government having her own constitution even before India has adopted her own constitution. Infact, Manipur is proud of being the first sovereign independent country to established democratically elected government through adult franchise in whole of the south and south east Asia until it was annexed by India in 21st September, 1949.
