Hinton is a city in Summers County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,880 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Summers CountyGR6.

Hinton is located at 37°40′1″N, 80°53′12″W (37.667011, -80.886759)GR1. It is situated along the New River just north of its confluence with the Greenbrier River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 km² (3.0 mi²). 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it (24.26%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,880 people, 1,357 households, and 755 families residing in the city. The population density was 481.4/km² (1,244.5/mi²). There were 1,595 housing units at an average density of 266.6/km² (689.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.43% White, 5.49% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.

There were 1,357 households out of which 19.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.1% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.3% were non-families. 41.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the city the population was spread out with 19.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $20,323, and the median income for a family was $25,769. Males had a median income of $23,654 versus $25,543 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,909. About 22.6% of families and 27.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 35.1% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail service, provides service to Hinton. Amtrak Train 51, the westbound Cardinal, is scheduled to depart Hinton at 6:01pm on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday with service to Prince, Thurmond, Montgomery, Charleston, Huntington, Ashland, South Portsmouth, Maysville, Cincinnati, Connersville, Indianapolis, Crawfordsville, Lafayette, Rensselaer, Dyer, and Chicago. Amtrak Train 50, the eastbound Cardinal, is scheduled to depart Hinton at 10:23am on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday with service to Alderson, White Sulphur Springs, Clifton Forge, Staunton, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Manassas, Alexandria, and Washington, DC, before continuing on to New York City.
