Hinduism in Mauritius

Hinduism originally came to Mauritius with Indians who worked as indentured servants of European settlers of the island. Today, Hinduism, followed by 52% of the island's population, has become the dominant political force in the island. According to the 2000 census, Hindus number 585,210 and make up 49.64% of the nation's population.
