Hind the wife of Amr

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hind was a sahaba of Muhammad and the wife of Amr ibn Jamooh, who was one of the chieftains of the clan of Banu Salmah in Medina. Amr was an ardent devotee of the deity Manah. Amr had an image of Manat in his prayer room which had been chiselled out of the choicest wood. He would wrap it with the best of perfumes and took good care of it.

When Masab ibn Umair carried out the Dawah, all three of his sons Muawwaz ibn Amr, Muaaz ibn Amr and Khallad ibn Amr along with his wife Hind professed the shahadah and converted to Islam. however, the four kept their faith a secret from Amr.

Unaware of their conversion, Amr even warned Hind of the "danger" posed by Masab to the traditional faith of Medina and asked her to guard the sons against it. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Hind advised him to listen to what their second son Muaaz had to tell them. Muaaz then recited the surah Fatihah. The message went straight to the heart of Am’r. The opening surah of the Qur'an touched Amr, but he was reclucant to abandon Manah. After much prayer, and the repeated theft of the statue by his sons, Amr decided that Manah was not worthy of worship and joined the Islamic faith.
