Hilltop Mall
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hilltop Mall is a 140-store 1,069,000 sq. ft. mall in the U.S. city of Richmond, California (part of the San Francisco Bay Area). Hilltop is a typical American mall which opened in September of 1976, with a variety of shops. The mall was developed by the Taubman Company, which developed other shopping malls in the Bay Area such as Eastridge Mall in San Jose and Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton. Taubman also owns Sunvalley Mall in Concord. Taubman sold the center in 1998 to GM Pension Trusts but continued to manage it. [1] Hilltop Mall was acquired by the Mills Corporation in 2004.
Hilltop Mall opened with three anchor stores: JCPenney, a bright red-tiled Emporium Capwell, and Sears. Later, Macy's joined the mall. After Emporium-Capwell closed, Macy's moved to its vacated location. Currently the fourth anchor store remains vacant, although a Wal-Mart has been proposed for this space and the mall's website advertises it as coming soon on its mall map. This proposed "upscale" Wal-Mart has been met with intense and fervant community opposition. The mall location for this Wal-Mart is an alternative to the company's first choice pick of a lot in more affluent Hercules, however that city used eminent domain to prevent its construction after the community there would not hear of it. The transformation of the old Macy's into a Wal-Mart has not even begun and it is unclear if it will.
Hilltop also has dozens of smaller clothing boutiques for men, women, teens, and children. It has shoe stores including six Foot Locker stores (including a Lady Footlocker and Kids' Footlocker), electronics stores such as EB Games, RadioShack and Ritz Camera, and athletic stores such as Champs Sports and Copeland's Sports.
There are also jewelry stores, bookstores, stationers, luggage shops, music, video, gift and toy stores. There are also restaunts, mostly fast food, that include Burger King, McDonalds and others. Miscellaneous services include a hair salon, manicurist, portrait studios, a dentist and optometrists. There is a wide range of catering facilities and a health bar at the 24-Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport gym. The mall previously was home to two movie theatures.
